The eighties: A decade when fashion soared to new heights…and, at times, plummeted to extreme lows. Yet today, in 2009, I am here to tell you that they’re back, with a vengeance. Yes, that’s right ladies, time to resurrect your bold shouldered power suits, tapered pants, and Doc Martens.
During the fall 2009 fashion shows, Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana, Balmain, and Louis Vuitton, just to name a few, paid homage to the era. Here are a few examples of what’s popping up: the color black, in the most dramatic way; neon colors; and bold shoulders.
As always, it’s important to remember that a trend is just a trend. Don’t go overhauling your wardrobe just to fit the moment: it’s neither style nor price conscious. Instead, try incorporating a few key items that can easily update your look. Here are a few that fit the bill (see above for photos): acid wash denim jacked from F21, pair it with a floral mini-dress; sparkly sleeveless mini-dress, perfect for a summer night out; or, if you really want to make a statement, try a pair of docs with your favorite leggings.
On a final note, judging by the Annie Lennox and Madonna-inspired looks that I spotted out last weekend, this trend has already landed in KC…expect it to stick around through winter.
